The Dublin senior mens and womens novice cross country took place today in the Phoenix park. One of the toughest fields in quite a few years assembled on the start line on what proved to be a beautiful day for competition. Clonliffe won the team event with 20 points from Rathfarnhams 41, the key to Clonliffes success was a superb performance from their star man Dave Fitzmaurice 18:24 who finished comfortably ahead of Donores Lee van Haeften 18:53. St. Malachy’s duo Joe McAlister and Gary Murray were in action today in the World Half Marathon championships in Birmingham. Joe was looking to continue his fine form which saw him win the National title last month in Ballybofey in a then PB time of 65.51, and he did not disappoint running a PB of 64:57. Fresh off her silver medal in the world championships 20K walk Olive Loughnane continued her fine form in the IAAF Walking Grand Challenge Final in Russia. She was rewarded with a new 10k national record in a time of 43 min 22 seconds to get fourth in the race. Loughnane had earned enough points this year to qualify for a top eight spot in the walk rankings which automatically gained her entry to this race. The Minister of Art, Sport and Tourism, Martin Cullen has appointed seven new members to the Irish Sports Council one of which being former three time Olympian Eamon Coghlan. Coghlan will serve a five year tenure and will play a vital role in the ISC's high performance plans.
